CUSTODY MOTION FOR A LITHUANIAN CITIZEN SUSPECTED OF MIGRANT SMUGGLING

23.01.2024. 11:36
The duty prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH sent a motion to the Court of BiH to impose the custody measure on the suspect:
  • CUSTODY MOTION FOR A LITHUANIAN CITIZEN SUSPECTED OF MIGRANT SMUGGLING

- Savulis Vladas, born in 1984 in Lazdijai, Lithuania.

The suspect is under investigation by the BiH Prosecutor’s Office and is suspected of having attempted to illegally transport 27 migrants of Afro-Asian origin across the state border in a trailer with a purpose-built, concealed space on 20 January of this year, with the intention of acquiring unlawful property gain.

The Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina discovered the suspect and the smuggled persons at the international border-crossing point Gradiška on exit from Bosnia and Herzegovina during a regular control of the freight motor vehicle with Lithuanian registration number plates, after which they were apprehended. The discovered illegal migrants were handed over to members of the Service for Foreigners’ Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina for further processing.

The custody measure was proposed due to the risk of flight of the suspect, who would become unavailable to the judicial authorities if he left Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Prosecutor’s Office of BiH and the Border Police, together with partner agencies, are constantly undertaking activities to prevent illegal migration and prosecute criminal offences related to illegal migrations in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

After deliberating on the motion of the BiH Prosecutor’s Office, the Court of BiH ordered the mentioned suspect into custody.

*Note on the principle of presumption of innocence

This announcement does not prejudice the outcome of the criminal proceedings and does not violate the principle of the presumption of innocence. A person shall be considered innocent of a crime until guilt has been established by a final verdict (Article 3, paragraph 1 of the CPC BiH).
