CHIEF PROSECUTOR MET WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ASSOCIATIONS OF WAR CRIMES VICTIMS

08.10.2013. 15:03
The Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH has met with representatives of several associations of families of war crimes victims to discuss the future cooperation of the Prosecutor’s Office and victims’ families in the prosecution of war crimes.

The Chief Prosecutor has stated that the families of the victims and cooperation with victims are priorities for the Prosecutor’s Office and that he constantly insists on expediting the process of exhumation and identification of missing persons, as well as on expediting the work on war crimes cases, because that is important for victims, who have been searching for their closest ones for two decades already and who expect to get justice from the judicial institutions.

The Chief Prosecutor has informed the representatives of the victims about the planned capacity strengthening of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH and the increase in the number of Prosecutors, which would assist in expediting the war crimes prosecution, as well as about the planned relocation to a separate building, where the Prosecutor’s Office will get adequate space to accommodate all the employees and professional working conditions.

Also, in the coming period, the  BiH institutions will be asked to allocate more funds for exhumations, because this year’s work on exhumations has indicated that some localities, such as Tomašica near Prijedor and a city dump in Sarajevo, will require substantial resources with regards to recovery of the mortal remains.

Victims have given support to strengthening of the capacities of the Prosecutor’s Office, as well as to the realization of the cooperation between the Prosecutor’s Offices in the region in the fight against impunity for war crimes and in preventing  suspects and accused persons to hide behind their dual citizenships.

Representatives of the victims have expressed their hope that the regional cooperation will be further developed and strengthened, and that all suspects will be brought to justice.

Because of the importance of good cooperation and communication with victims’ associations, the Chief Prosecutor will hold a series of meetings with representatives of associations of war crimes victims of all ethnic groups from all parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in order to learn firsthand what the families of victims expect from the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH and to discuss future cooperation.
