Library

The Library of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a professional law library. The Library is used by employees of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH, the Court of BiH, the Registry and the Criminal Defense Section, but is also available to others interested in receiving some basic information. In order to develop a unified library and documentation centre as an indispensable and permanent support to the bodies of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH, the Court of BiH, the Registry as well as the Criminal Defense Section the Library aims to accomplish the following goals:

  • Keeping abreast of the current domestic and international publications, and providing supply of reference literature in accordance with the needs the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH, the Court of BiH and the Registry staff
  • Cataloguing, classification and subject indexation of materials according to the applicable international standards, Universal Decimal Classification and internal library classification scheme
  • Providing information, as well as library and archive materials needed for various research activities
  • Providing access to official information, legal framework and legislation related to the work of the Registry, the Court and the Office of the Prosecutor of BiH
  • Automatisation of the Library in accordance with the standards of library software systems
  • Developing periodical catalogues on new materials available in the Library
  • Making databases available via optical media and Web
  • Developing virtual collections
  • Cooperating with libraries and scientific institutions in the country and abroad in terms of exchange of publications, information etc. 

Currently, the Library is in possession of approximately 1000 titles in English and the official languages of BiH mainly in the field of Criminal Law and International Humanitarian Law. In addition the Library is in possession of the Official Gazettes of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republika Srpska, the Brčko District and Sarajevo Canton, a set of the Official Gazettes of SFRY and Serbia and Montenegro for the period 1945-2004 and it is also subscribed to a number of periodicals. A small portion of the library holdings was acquired through donations, and the rest was purchased in accordance with the needs of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH, the Court of BiH and the Registry. Library holdings are processed in accordance with the International Standard Bibliographic Description for Monographic Publications and they are classified in accordance with the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC). There is an ongoing process of equipping and automatisation of the library which should ensure data centralization, and hence accelerate book lending procedures, decrease work expenditures, enable access to the library’s catalogue through the Intranet, allow access to multimedia and electronic files, etc. There are 15 reading seats in the Library, 6 of which are equipped with computers and permanent internet access, in addition to a copy machine, a printer and a scanner that is also be available in the Library.
